Loft insulation

Loft insulation is a simple and effective way to stop the heat escaping your property and reduce your heating bills.

Peter Cox will lay new insulation in most standard roof areas in most domestic properties, and can also top up insulation over the existing areas up to 270mm. If existing insulation is already in place but needs topping up we can install the new insulation at right angles over the existing, taking care to not block any existing intentional ventilation such as vents, grilles or airbricks.

What Is Loft Insulation?

Loft insulation is simply material that reduces the rate at which heat is lost from your property through the loft space. In most homes this typically involves rolls of insulation being laid over the ceiling joists.

Properties that already have insulation may also need a top-up if the levels installed previously do not meet the standard of today's requirements. The current recommended depth for standard mineral wool insulation (270mm).

Loft insulation is generally regarded as a sound investment as it can be effective for up to 40 years and will more than pay for itself in terms of energy savings over that time.

If your loft is easily accessible and has no damp or condensation problems, then installing loft insulation is fairly straightforward… and even if there are potential damp problems Peter Cox has been advising on and fixing those since 1952.

Why should you insulate your attic or roof space?

The first reason is that it’s good for the environment. The more heat you keep in your property, the less energy you use which means burning less fuel, which helps save the planet. An uninsulated loft in a detached home once insulated to 270mm thickness insulation could save 1310kg CO2 per year (Energy Saving Trust 2022).

Obviously the less fuel you use, the more money you save! It is also estimated that an uninsulated loft, once insulted, could save you up to £380 in energy bill savings per year, at Nov 2021 prices (Energy Saving Trust 2022). With the cost of living set to rise this could increase even higher.

Installing or topping up your roof insulation as part of our treatments, whilst already on site, can be a much more cost effective solution than employing a separate contractor at a later date.

Benefits of loft insulation

The benefits of loft insulation

In the current economic climate, where energy prices are as high as they have ever been, saving money is the standout benefit of loft insulation. That said, it also has the environmental benefit of reducing your carbon footprint.

Furthermore loft insulation can increase the value of a property and ease a sale by improving the EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating.
